Voice channel setup
Connect a phone number to an AI agent, so it answers the calls to that number and makes calls from it.
A NuTalk account with an agent. To buy a number, you need to be an owner or admin, with a card on file.
How a voice channel works
A voice channel connects a phone number to an agent. When someone calls the number, or the agent places a call from a campaign or the API, the agent handles the conversation.
- A caller dials your NuTalk number.
- The call reaches NuTalk's voice engine.
- Your agent answers and handles the conversation.
- The call shows up in Calls with its recording and transcript.
Start a voice channel
- In the dashboard, open Channels in the sidebar, under Channels & phones.
- Click Connect Channel and choose Voice.
- The New Voice Channel form opens. Each of its cards unlocks once the one before it is done.
Choose a phone number
In the Phone Number card, pick one of three options:
- Use assigned number
- A number your workspace already has. Pick it from the available numbers.
- Use your own number
- Verify a number you own with a text message or a call. A verified number is caller ID for outgoing calls only: it can't receive calls.
- Get a new number
- Buy a number in Mexico, the United States or Canada.
To buy one, choose Get a new number, then:
- Click Buy a number, choose the country and search by area code.
- Pick a number from the results and click Continue.
- Check the price and the card, and confirm. It's charged today, then monthly.
Mexican numbersThe carrier registers every Mexican number to a company. Before your first one, you register your company once: your official ID or company registration, your RFC and your fiscal address. The number can take calls once the carrier approves it.
Leave Enable inbound calls for this channel on, so calls to the number reach this channel's agent. A number's incoming calls go to one channel only.
Link your agent and choose its voice
- In AI Agent, choose Link to existing agent and select your agent. The channel uses its deployed version, and new deployments apply automatically.
- Or choose Create new agent: give it a name and, if you want, instructions. Left blank, the instructions are a generic lead-qualification playbook.
- In Voice, choose the voice callers hear. Preview voices, or filter them by language, gender and accent.
- In Call Behavior, choose the conversation pace: Balanced, Fast for short pauses, or Patient for longer ones.
- Click Create Voice Channel. The channel's page opens. To rename the channel, for example “Main support line”, use the pencil next to its name.
Review the channel's settings
The channel's page lists its settings, each with its current value. Click a row to change it.
- Incoming calls
- With Accept Inbound Calls on, the channel's agent answers the calls to its number.
- Caller screening
- Block Anonymous Callers rejects calls with a hidden, restricted or unknown caller ID. It needs incoming calls on.
- Retries
- Calling again when nobody answers is set in each campaign. Campaigns →
Make a test call
- On the channel's page, open Test call.
- Add your phone as a test number: you get a 6-digit code by text message to verify it. A call to any other number is a regular call and uses credits.
- Click Start Test Call and answer your phone.
- When the call ends, open Calls to read the transcript and play the recording.
Done: your voice channel is live. Share the number with your customers, or call from it in outbound campaigns.
